Microplane Culinary Tools - From the Workshop to the Kitchen
Microplane®, a division of Grace Manufacturing Inc., is the premier brand worldwide for
exceptionally sharp culinary tools. Possibly most famous for their graters and zesters, the
brand has revolutionized the way chefs and home cooks grate and zest a wide range of
ingredients for flavorful, gourmet style cooking and baking. The family-owned and managed
company designs and crafts 40+ Microplane kitchen tools. Beyond their graters and zesters,
they offer a variety of kitchen gadgets, including tools for garlic, apples, ginger, herbs,
spices, avocados, bar accessories, spiralizers, food slicers and much, much more.
Microplane’s ascent in the culinary field began in the 1990s with the launch of a new type of
tool for the company’s successful Woodworking Tools division. The long and narrow, rasp-style tool,
featuring hundreds of tiny stainless steel razors was first created to shape or file wood.
From the Woodshop to the Kitchen
The big moment came in 1994, when a Canadian homemaker picked up a new woodworking tool, in complete
frustration over using a dull grater for the preparation of an orange cake recipe. Sliding the orange
across the Microplane tool, she was amazed at how beautifully it worked, with total ease, speed,
and efficiency. At this point, Microplane crossed over from the wood shop to the kitchen and in a
short period of time has earned a permanent place in the kitchen. Today, culinary professionals and
savvy home cooks consider Microplane to be an essential kitchen tool for food preparation.
