Modal fabric is a bio-based fabric that is made from spinning beech tree cellulose. Modal is generally considered a more eco-friendly alternative to cotton because beech trees don’t require much water to grow and therefore the production process uses about 10-20 times less water.
Modal fabric is a “semi-synthetic” fabric that is commonly combined with other fibers to create a soft and long-lasting material.
Modal fabric feels silky-smooth like a cozy, breathable, soft hug which makes it one of the more luxurious vegan fabrics. It’s generally found in the garments from higher-end sustainable clothing brands.

At Lua, they are particularly interested in tradional weaving techniques, rich artistry, and especially Shibori. Shibori is an intricate and distinctive dyeing method traditionally done in Japan since the 8th centuryl Binding, stitching, folding, twisting, pole wrapping or compressing of cloth air drying under sunny skies, creates the Shibori effect. Each method results in distintive patterns in which no two are the same.
