Design: Bill Stumpf & Don Chadwick for Herman Miller®, 1994
Remastered by Don Chadwick, 2016
While its iconic form has remained largely unchanged, the Aeron® chair has been remastered
from the casters up to meet the needs of today's work and workers. With the help of original
co-designer, Don Chadwick, Herman Miller thoughtfully updated the chair based on the latest research
around the science of sitting, and advancements in materials, manufacturing, and technology.
The new Aeron chair comes in 3 sizes and has a new 8Z Pellicle® material that delivers increased
comfort and ergonomic support. Across the seat and back, 8 latitudinal zones of varying tension
envelope the sitter, tightest at the edges and more forgiving where the body makes contact. The
chair has pneumatic height adjustment and a balanced recline that lets the body naturally pivot
at the ankles, knees, and hips.
Tilt options include a tilt limiter that allows the user to select the tilt range to limit the
amount of recline; a tilt limiter and seat angle that allows the user to select the tilt range
and a horizontal or 5° forward seat angle; or a standard tilt.
Back-support options include adjustable PostureFit® SL, an adjustable lumbar support, and
PostureFit. The adjustable PostureFit SL support provides a custom fit in sacral and lumbar
regions of the spine that helps achieve healthier posture and improved lower back comfort.
The user can fine tune the level of support with an adjustable knob on the PostureFit SL.
Arm choices include a fixed, nonadjustable option; a height-adjustable option that moves the
arms 4" vertically; a height-adjustable plus pivot option that moves the arms 4" vertically
and pivots the armpads 15° outward and 17 1/2° inward; and a fully adjustable option that
also allows the armpads to move forward and back.
Aeron is now offered in a range of 3 tightly curated, holistic material expressions:
graphite, carbon, and mineral. Graphite refines Aeron's original color scheme for a
crisp, sculptural appearance. Carbon blurs light and dark, and warm and cool, to
harmonize with a variety of environments. Mineral illuminates Aeron's finer points
to offer a lightness that borders on translucence.

for most people. The A size fits those who are smaller and lighter; the C size
fits taller and heavier people. Anybody— from the 1st-percentile female to
the 99th-percentile male—can find a perfect Aeron fit.
Tilt Adjustments
Easy-to-use comfort knobs have replaced levers for both tilt adjustments.
Standard Tilt - allows you to recline in your chair. The standard tilt does not
offer any controls for the tilt function.
Tilt Limiter - allows you to set the angle where your chair will stop reclining.
This means you can also lock your chair into an upright position.
Seat Angle Adjustment - allows you to move the seat of the chair into a forward
tilting position. This slight forward angle is beneficial for those who like to sit
upright or lean forward while working.
Arm Options
The new version of the Aeron chair has a softer arm pad for increased comfort.
Fixed arms are stationary.
Height adjustable arms move up and down by releasing the lever at the back of the arm,
sliding the arm into your desired position and using the lever to lock the arm into place.
The redesigned Aeron Chair arm has an improved mechanism that makes adjusting the height
of the arms smooth and effortless.
Adjustable arms pivot from side to side while also having the height adjustment feature.
Fully Adjustable Arms slide forward and backward up to 2.5″. They are height adjustable and pivot as well.
Innovative Fabric
The Aeron Chair now features 8Z Pellicle™ fabric that offers 8 zones of support.
Latitudinal zones of varying tension create an exceptionally comfortable sitting experience.
The Aeron frame is paired with the redesigned pellicle fabric in a coordinating color for a
clean, classic look.
Back Support Zonal Basic Back Support is provided by the 8Z Pellicle fabric and the zones of varying tensions.
Lumbar Support is a height adjustable back support option that applies pressure in the lumbar region.
Adjustable PostureFit SL™ Support is a new and improved adjustable back support option for the Herman
Miller Aeron Chair. It offers support for both your lumbar area and sacrum. Two pads move independently
to support your back. It can be easily adjusted to fit the curve of your spine.
Casters Standard Carpet Casters are made of hard black plastic and are ideal for thin carpeted surfaces.
Standard Hard Floor or Carpet Casters are made from a black rubberized material that glides more
smoothly and quietly on hard surfaces.
Hard Floor or Carpet Casters with Quiet Roll Technology are made of soft nylon and are ultra-quiet
when rolling. They also have a subtle braking feature that helps to prevent the chairs from
rolling when not in use.
