    Description

Designed by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller®

The molded plastic shell of this Eames chair is 100 percent recyclable and lends a lovely matte texture to its iconic form. Set atop the 4-Leg Base, use it as a durable and sustainable dining chair, meeting chair, or guest chair.

    Eames Molded Plastic Chairs
Charles and Ray Eames adapted molding techniques developed during World War II to produce their classic shell chair’s simple, gracious form. In 2001, continuing the Eames’ design ethos of continual, iterative advancements, Herman Miller reintroduced the original Eames Molded Shell Chair (1950) in a durable, 100 percent recyclable polypropylene. In 2022, they enhanced it once more by crafting select recycled chairs with 100 percent post-industrial recycled plastic. The subtle matte texture of the re-engineered plastic shell maintains the soft tactility of the original design, available in your choice of vintage and contemporary colors, with three leg materials and styles and leveling floor glides.

Eames Molded Plastic Chairs are available as side chairs or armchairs, and in a choice of colors, including archival or new options. Armchair and side chair shells can be fully upholstered in a variety of textiles; side chair shells can be specified with an upholstered seat pad. A choice of bases rounds out your customization options.

    Specifications

    Colorful Variety
Originally produced in only three neutral colors—greige, elephant-hide grey, and parchment—the chair is now available many colors that range from vibrant to subtle, and either chrome, white or black base.

    Good for the Earth
Shells are made of polypropylene—which is 100 percent recyclable. The plating process used for the trivalent chrome finish reduces environmental and health issues associated with other forms of chrome plating.

    Glide Options
Swiveling glides keep the four legs steady and level on uneven floors. The standard glide is also available with felt to protect hard-surface floors.

    Design Story

    Design: Ray and Charles Eames
A classic piece of mid-century furniture. The first mass-produced plastic chair. And as stylish today as when it was designed in 1950.

A Work of Art that Works
True to the original, but now made with eco-friendly materials, the Eames molded plastic armchair is what it has always been—an art object for your home that is also comfortable, useful, and durable. The organic shapes and sophisticated lines of this chair work anywhere—in the dining area, living room, family room, home office.

    Design Staying Power
As beloved today as when it was first introduced in 1950, the Eames molded plastic armchair features organic shapes and sleek lines. The first one-piece plastic chair offered without upholstery or other covering, it achieved a pervasive presence that proves the staying power of good design. It sits beautifully in many places in the home and in all kinds of decor.

    Classic Comfort
Charles and Ray Eames believed that comfort was as important as looks. So comfort is built in. The shell seats have high, flexible backs, deep seat pockets, and waterfall front edges so you can sit comfortably even for extended periods.
