About the Artist:
Sumiko Takada has been working with clay for over 15 years. She has studied in Japan with Yasunori Nishio and Jun Terada both in Komaki, Aichi and in the United States at Worthington Community Center and Columbus College of Art & Design.
Her recent exhibitions include “Patterns in Clay: Two Approaches” at Canton Museum of Art, Canton, OH, “2016 Ohio State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition” receiving Ohio Arts Council Award, Columbus, OH and “Building”, a group exhibition at Fitton Center for the Arts, Hamilton, OH.
Sumiko creates her functional work with stoneware that is fired to cone 5 in oxidation. Her inlaid pieces are painstakingly crafted by hand: first carving the designs on the ware, then filling them with colored slip, and finally cleaning up the excess slips. She also uses slip decorations and various glazes of her own formula in her work.
