Degree Glass is the collaborative effort of two young glass artists and designers, Ekin Aytaç and Joshua Davids. Partnered in life and glass for the last three years the pair has worked hard to push their own limitations and develop new and exciting works of art. Ekin and Josh have been with Glass Art Kalamazoo for the last year as Studio Managers and Resident Artists.
Ekin Deniz Aytaç was born and raised in Edremit, Turkey. After graduating from the sculpture program of Marmara University in Istanbul, Ekin was introduced to glass when she began work at the prestigious Cam Ocagi (The Glass Furnace). Residents, teachers, and visiting artists included Lino Tagliapietra, Dante Marioni, and many other maestro’s from both Europe and the United States. Ekin continued her glass journey moving to the town of Novy Bor in the Czech Republic intent on developing her skills as a glass artist. Later she would attend a master’s program at West Texas A&M University for glass and Sculpture. Developing her skills over 7 years of glass making, Ekin is interested in creating unique works with an emphasis in a process informed by her heritage and experience in art and life.
Joshua Davids was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. Trained in printmaking, design, glass, and sculpture, Joshua brings a rich background and diverse skill set to the team. Along with degrees from Regis University and West Texas A&M, he has worked in glass production shops and trained with master glass makers from around the world. Honing skills in the glass studio over 9 years, Joshua is focused on developing objects with a strong emphasis on design utilizing the unique qualities inherent in glass to realize thoughts, feelings, emotions, and the stuff of experience within the static object.
