The Design Gallery at Design Quest showcases sculptural wood turning by artist, Matthew Hutchinson.
About the Artist:
Matthew Hutchinson grew up in St. Joseph, Michigan and from an early age was active in music and the visual arts. At twelve years old he
fell in love with woodworking, and at twenty three years old he began woodturning. Pursuing his dream of being a professional woodworker,
Matthew moved to Grand Rapids in 2006 with his wife and opened a custom woodworking business, Old Arbor Turnery, LLC. A skilled
craftsman, he specializes in woodturned art, architectural woodturnings, spindle duplication, woodenware, and furniture making. He has
worked with clients, both private and corporate, designing functional products and artwork. In 2010 he finished in the top 50 in ArtPrize with
his piece Cherry Log Vase.
Artist's Statement:
I am captivated by both woodworking and sculpture, and these two passions came together when I turned my first piece of wood on a lathe
eight years ago. As a medium, wood fascinates me, always surprising in its variation and beauty. As a process, few things rival the
experience of cutting a delicate shaving from a spinning piece of wood as I bring my vision to life.
I am inspired by many things, from the organic ruggedness of a tree's bark to the clean lines of Art Deco. Whether it's a spindle turning or a
large hollow form, each piece presents a new opportunity to challenge my imagination and test my skill. As I continue to grow as an artist,
I aspire to use elegant, simple forms that feature the natural beauty of wood in fresh and unique ways.
